Different kinds of bedroom aids available in the market:

Electric and semi-electric beds
Semi-electric beds have hand controls which are used to adjust the head and knee sections of the bed automatically. However, height adjustment needs to be done manually in such beds. Fully electric bed, on the other hand, is fully automatic with even height adjustments controlled by a hand-held control apart from head and knee sections.

Such beds are useful for people who require frequent or immediate changes in body position due to various reasons such as pain, difficulty in breathing and general discomfort. They can easily change their bed position through some remote control and they can also uplift their bedhead by the same process.

Bedside commodes
Patient suffering from limited mobility due to injury or illness and elderly people require bedside commodes. Bedside commode consists of a frame, backrest, toilet seat and a pan on the lower part. The pain is removable to enable easy cleaning. The commodes can also come with wheels for easy transport to the patient’s bedroom. Paediatric bedside commodes are also available for small children. Bariatric commodes specially designed for seniors are also available in the market. These are large and comfortable seats with rubber tips for additional convenience. The commodes are made of heavy duty materials such as steel.

Double sided grab rails
These are steel frames with loops or grips on each side to assist the patient in climbing up /down from the bed or lying and sitting up on the bed. The grab rail is fixed between the mattress and the base of the bed. Plastic grab rails are also available in the market.

Alternating or low-pressure mattresses
Patients who spend most of their time on the bed are at risk of developing bed sores. The alternating and low-pressure mattresses are designed to prevent bed sores. These mattresses contain many air cells that can be filled with air and emptied alternately. Inflation and deflation of the mattress are done with the help of a pump. This causes frequent changes in the distribution of body pressure and helps in preventing bed sores. Alternating pressure also enhances blood flow in areas such as knees, hips, elbows, and ankles.

Both electrical and hydraulically operated patient lifters are available in the market.
