Plumbing work is common in every house hold. Although plumbers are the experts and aware of all the terminologies involved plumbing, there are a few parts in plumbing that we, although laymen in the topic, are aware of, such as hose coupling, washers etc.
Hose couplings are used to connect 2 pipes or a tap to the pipe:
We have both plastic hose coupling and metal hose couplings. Needless to say metal couplings last longer.
Hose Coupling |
There are different types of coupling like the L coupling with 2 openings, T coupling with 3 openings put a x or + coupling that has 4 openings.
Hose coupling is a quick device to connect fluid transfer system. It consists of 2 parts:
- Adaptor: Usually referred to as the male. They have grooves on the outside.
- Coupler: Usually referred to as the female. They have grooves on the inside.
Household and gardening fittings are available in
- Brass: Heavier and more expensive. They come in individually the female and male adapter.
- Plastic: Similar in design and durability to the brass counterparts but are a lesser amount of expensive. They can withstand various levels of water pressure. Ideal for home and garden use.
- Nylon polymer composite couplings: Can be considered as compromise between plastic and brass couplings. That is, you can say that it is not as expensive or heavy as brass but not as light or affordable as plastic.
Hose Coupling |
All the above three types of couplings mentioned here are effective, durable and affordable and you can be sure of this while making your purchase as per your budget for your home.
Hose couplings can be bought from a local hardware store or online. You will find pictures and details about the size of the coupling and other details the plumber has specified about.
Let’s learn about some types of hose couplings:
Camlock: They are easy to connect and disconnect hose and pipe work. They are designed to carry granules, liquids, gases etc. Camlock couplings operate by opening the coupler arms and inserting the adaptor into the coupler.
Hygienic fittings: These fittings are usually used where importance is given for hygiene. The manufacturer can customize this for your specification if required. These are used to transfer. Common usages found in brewery, pharmaceuticals, dairy etc. These couplings can be easily removed to clean and sterilize. You can request for certification for documenting purposes.
Hose Coupling |
Suction delivery: The suctions and delivery couplings are used for industrial purposes to transfer industrial liquids.
Bauer couplings: Usually used in industrial applications where water needs to be transferred in large scale. They provide quick solutions to join a large number of hose together. They are commonly used for the pumping and transfer of water. The purpose of these couplings is mostly used in the construction (for loading and unload road tankers), road maintenance and general irrigation industries.
Fire hose couplings: This is commonly used on fire hose assemblies.
Most of the above are available in brass, stainless steel, and plastic or polymer material. We need hose clamps and clips to have an effective sealing. There are clamps and clips available for this purpose in stainless steel and other materials as per your requirement. They are easy to use on big diameters, where there are rounded edges to prevent damage to the ducting. There will be points where you may need permanent clamping, that is, these will be areas where you don’t want to disconnect the hose for cleaning purpose etc. In such cases ear clamps are available. They carry as a support holding the pipes to its place. There is single ear clamp or double ear clamp available as per your need.
